Arlen Ness Bob Dron Fairing 06-950 Review
I have successfully installed this fairing on 2 bikes. The fairing does require the larger, early style FLH 7 1/2 " headlamp assy to fill the ' hole ' in the fairing. Headlamp mounts vary in heghts, but I used the taller ones that are found on most custom/stock replacement sites. The 1st bike has a standard FLH triple clamp set with all the stock ' tin ' attach points; the fairing support frames use these same locations. On this bike, installation was a snap. I put one on my newest bike; a 2011, FXS Softail & had a bit more figuring to do,but it's worked out fine. Because this bike's triple clamps don't have the FLH's attach points, I installed a set of 41 MM custom turn signal clamps set at a different height & angles than was ' correct ', but it has allowed me more adjustment in mounting & actual wind deflection. I also had to move the front signals from the bars to the ends of the shield's mount frames. This also was not rocket science. I've been pleased with both installs, but I do wish that a taller shield was available-or, one that the owner could trim to their desired height. I was told by Bob Dron's folks that a taller shield would probably require more bracing & they're right, but it can also be worked out.I plan on cutting a shield & bracing as required, this winter. I have added some grip shields from ' GreatBikeGear.com ' & this takes care of your exposure at the bar ends fairly well. you will find that this kit does require some work to the frames in that filing & sanding will take care of the sharp edges on the frames. I beadblasted mine to get a nice finish on them-they're stainless steel & clean up nice. On the 1st bike, I mounted some aftermarket sportbike turn signals, & they're fine. The kits are good ones for their price as long as the owner is prepared to work at the mountings & finish & they actually do a fair job at wind deflection. I also got a better windshield on the 2nd one, which was appreciated. I had bought the 1st one about 3 years ago, so the time has brought some refinement. Good product. On a side note; Bob Dron has since retired from his dealership, but Ness as the supplier, handled the questions anyways-you'll get your questions answered just fine by them. A side benefit is that the mounting frames provide a handy space to carry a few, bundled items; jacket, rain gear, which also ' fill ' any air leaking past the front of the fairing but keeping all this-& you, dry. Most of the consumer Reviews tell that the "Arlen Ness Bob Dron Fairing 06-950" are high quality item.
