2013 Alpinestars Tech 3 All-Terrain Motocross Boots BLK-10 Review

I don't write many reviews, but I feel compelled to write this one to make others aware of issues with this product.

I have now had my Tech 3 boots for about 8 months, and I can say without question that these are the most disappointing pair of boots I have ever owned, and I've owned a lot of boots, going all the way back to classic Hi Points with the external metal shin guard that were "it" back in the 70s.

Notice that I did not say the "worst", but rather the "most disappointing", as I am surprised that a company as respected and well-know as Alpinestars has something like this in their product line. I've had worse boots, but they did not command the retail price of Tech 3s.

First, the good. The boots are reasonably light weight, and they do appear to offer a great deal of protection for the money. I feel as though my feet are as well protected in these boots as some high-dollar boots I have owned.

The bad. The primary problem is that these boots are stiff to the point of allowing almost no real movement of the ankle joint, even after extensive efforts to "break them in". I've walked the dog in them, walked up and down hills, wore them shopping, and ridden in them enough to significantly wear the soles, yet they still allow almost no movement, and this translates into no braking control. I am primarily a woods rider and I need good rear brake control, and in these boots my right foot might as well be a club. In fact, the only way I can ride in them is to adjust the brake pedal as low as it will go, and my braking motion is now largely rocking my leg forward. Shifting is not really a problem, but I probably do catch more false neutrals in these boots, just because of a total lack of "feel".

A second, less serious problem concerns the buckle design. The buckles are extremely difficult to open, and da## near impossible when your hands are sore and tired after a harescramble or long trail ride. I've actually pried on them with a screwdriver on occasion. Yet as difficult to open as they are when you are done riding, I've had them come open during rides and races. I do not understand how that can happen, but it does.

Overall, I am very unhappy with these boots. They are not the worst boots ever, but they sure are not worth the $200+ price they command. I really regret not returning mine immediately as they felt so stiff when new (bought online), but I assumed (incorrectly) that they would break in. By the time it was clear that they were never going to break in, they were way to beat up to return. If you are looking for boots in the $200 dollar range, I would take Tech 3s off your list!
